Happy Fourth of July!

The Fourth of July weekend is a time to reflect on our appreciation that we are an independent nation.  We also express gratitude to the veterans who fought to keep us keep that freedom.  Of course people flock to beaches, barbecues and parties to get some much-needed rest and relaxation.

Smith Point County Park is a gathering place during the summer, especially on Fourth of July.  There is a beautiful beach, playground, trails and those fantastic waves.  You might even see some fireworks in the sky.  Many people are headed to Umbrella Beach in Montauk to watch the Fourth of July fireworks.

No matter what you do, don't drink and drive.  The majority of the car accidents on this holiday (and others) involve drinking and driving.  Have a designated driver or barbecue at home if you want to enjoy a few summer cocktails, glasses of wine or beer.

Have a happy Fourth of July!  What will you be doing?

Make Spiritual Music with Silver Sky Imports

My friend is a budding Buddhist and introduced me to a variety of spiritual concepts.  Along with the spiritual nature of our studies, I discovered an array of beautiful decorating ideas.  Her home is filled with unique items and I asked about them.  I soon learned they each have a meaning and importance to her faith.

She recommended I check out the Silver Sky Imports website to find out more about the bowls displayed in her house.  On a table, she displays Tibetan singing bowls and crystal singing bowls along with a gong in her living room.  Tibetan singing bowls were brought to India many generations ago, along with the teachings of Lord Buddha.  They are made of 7 different metals that make 7 distinctly different tones.  They have a mysterious history but are definitely a very powerful spiritual tool - and an addition to your home that is sure to get attention from visitors.

Summer in Mastic Beach

Summer is here and the living is easy! Today is the last day of school for the elementary school students. Summer in Mastic Beach means sunny days, hazy night and plenty of time soaking up seaside pleasures. The natural beauty is all around us at the beaches, William Floyd Estate and our own backyards.

Happy summer everyone! Check out the Community Library for the Summer Reading Club. Children of all ages are included. The adult reading club encourages me to grab a book when I'm lounging by the pool. When parents read, it's a good example to the children! Today the library will be kicking off the Summer Reading Club with giveaways and events, so don't miss it. The library is an excellent place to chill out and cool down all summer.

Mastic Beach Village Proposal Passed

Mastic Beach Village proposal passed according to the Facebook page of Dan Panico!

Get ready Mastic Beach for a whole new page in history. We will all work together to make the neighborhood even better.

It was amazing how many people turned out for the Mastic Beach Village vote. We waited for over a half hour to cast our vote.

Change is certainly on the way...

What do you think of the results?

Mastic Beach Village Vote Brings Out Entire Neighborhood

It's a little after 9 pm and we just returned from the Mastic Beach village vote at the firehouse on Neighborhood Road.

I was pleased to see the number of concerned citizens voting about the possible village. Whether the votes were yes or no, certainly everyone in the neighborhood cares about the future of Mastic Beach.

The line went around the firehouse with demonstrators out on the street encouraging citizens to vote yes or no. The police indicated people could not get on line after 9 PM. Even with that in mind, the vote is sure to go on until at least 10 pm at this point.

While we waited to vote about the potential Incorporated Village of Mastic Beach, we crossed paths with many neighbors and friends. The children compared school schedules and I made a date to meet a friend at the gym once the kids are back.

I look forward to hearing the results of the Mastic Beach Village vote and working together to build an ever better neighborhood. Right now, News 12 is saying the vote is too close to call...

According to my unofficial poll, 29 percent are against the Village of Mastic Beach and 71 percent are for it...

Mastic Beach Village Vote on August 31, 2010

The Mastic Beach Village vote happens on August 31 between 12 noon and 9 pm at the Mastic Beach Fire House located at 265 Neighborhood Road in Mastic Beach.

Everyone is talking about the upcoming Mastic Beach village vote. What changes could an Incorporated Village of Mastic Beach bring to this community? As a Mastic Beach parent and homeowner for over a decade, it's a major concern for our family.

A drive through the area shows plenty of people are on both sides of the Mastic Beach Village vote issue. Signs promoting the Village and signs saying “no” to the Village are posted on lawns, common areas and at certain businesses.

A poll is posted to the right to see what people think of a possible Village of Mastic Beach. Take a minute to express your opinion.

To find out more about both sides of the Mastic Beach Village vote before you visit the polls, here are a few resources:

Getting the facts is essential before casting your vote. Heated debates, peer pressure and fiery exchanges are no substitute for doing your own research. When the public is well-informed, the democratic process works best.

Regardless of the results of the vote on Tuesday, it is crucial for everyone to work together to make Mastic Beach an even better community.
