Mastic Beach As An Incorporated Village

I am fence straddling about the idea of Mastic Beach becoming an incorporated village. While the additional tax revenue and designation would certainly improve the face of the community over time, can the residents afford it? Many people are strugging to maintain their homes now and Mastic Beach has one of the highest foreclosure rates in Suffolk County. Can we really place the burden of improving an entire community upon a limited number of already strained taxpayers? How will this impact the surrounding communities? What do you think?

well, the whole idea of a village was brought up and originally I thought it would be for the entire community. mastic, shirley and mastic beach. to add a layer of government on just a small group of people would be very expensive compared to the larger group, and quite honestly, much less effective. I think that the incorporated village needs to be setup for all three towns or not at all.

well, after leaving the meeting last nite, ive chosen to give up on this issue. it is not including the entire community and quite frankly, a bad idea. promises of everflowing money just seem incredulous to me and this just seems like a small group of people trying to 'buy' their way into power. y'all do what you want...glad I live in Shirley.

My understanding is that it will not add a layer of government, but will move certain government tasks from district to local. It makes total sense to me to have control of things like code violations managed locally.

I believe that school taxes, rather than village status, will cost the residents more.

I am in favour of having the village. As a newcomer, it is crazy to me that a community the size of Mastic Beach and/or Mastic and/or Shirley has neither ownership of local issues, nor a sewer.

Where I grew up, a hamlet consists of three cottages, twenty sheep, and a pub...

The village will not raise our taxes, because we are going to receive monies from municipalities that have been paid to Brookhaven town, it will now be put in our pockets, say for instance 500,000 that is being paid now to Brookhaven town , will be paid directly to us the village of Mastic Beach, so typically our taxes will go down and we the people of Mastic Beach will decide where we want to spend the money, not someone up on a hill.Come to our next meeting @ the Mastic beach fire house on December 1st 2008 7pm & get educated & get the real facts and not some fear producing rumors, probably spread by slumlord !
